in Alabama
Clinical Membership in AAMFT
Clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family
Therapy (AAMFT) is a national certification of competence in this distinct
mental health discipline. All members of AAMFT are bound by a professional
Code
of Ethics, which is essentially the same as the Standards of Conduct for
Marriage and Family Therapists approved the the Alabama Board of Examiners in
Marriage and Family Therapy. However, clinical membership is not the same as
licensure. Many, though not all, licensed marriage and family therapists are
clinical members of AAMFT. Some have also met the additional requirements to
become Approved Supervisors for those training to become marriage and family
therapists, and for those training to become supervisors of therapy. For more

Licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in Alabama
According to the marriage and family license law, other mental health
professionals who are practicing within the scope of their profession may
provide marriage and family therapy or counseling consistent with the accepted
standards of their respective professions. In addition, clergy and nurses are
exempted from the requirement to become licensed as marriage and family
therapist, as long as they are practicing with in the scope of his or her
practice. However, only persons who are licensed as marriage and family
therapists can advertise that they are licensed marriage and family
therapists (LMFTs), regardless of any other license they may hold.
